Killarney which is located in the South West of Ireland is the host of the 3 Irish Open from the 29th of July to 1st of August.
The Golf tournament is sponsored mainly by '3', which is one of the leading mobile phone and broadband providers in Ireland. Failte Ireland which is the Irish tourism association is also another sponsor.
The Killarney Golf and Fishing Club held off some very strong opposition in their bid to host the event - Mount Juliet Golf course (Co. Kilkenny) Fota Island (Co. Cork) and Baltray (Co. Louth).
This will be the third time that Killarney has hosted the Irish Open with consecutive events in 1991 and 1992. Nick Faldo won on both previous visits to Killarney when he won the title in 1991 and 1992, before completing a hat-trick in 1993 at Mount Juliet.
156 Proffessional Golfers will play for over 3 Million Euros in prize money. The Irish Open belongs to the prestigious European tours. The PGA European Tour is an organisation with headquarters in Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England.
It operates the three leading men's professional golf tours in Europe:
- the elite European Tour (the highest class)
- the developmental Challenge Tour (the second highest class)
- the European Seniors Tour (for professionals over 50)
Three tours of the PGA (Proffessional Golfers Association European Tour) are held in Europe.
In recent years an increasing number of tours have been held in other parts of the world outside of North America.
They will play at Killeen Golf Course situated very close to Killarney town centre, which has a beautiful setting with an ancient tree population and challenging water obstacles.
The Golfcourse stretches to 6564 metre, making it one of the largest golf courses in Ireland. The Golf Course was originally designed in 1972 by Eddie Hackett and Dr. Billy O’Sullivan. This championship golf course is surrounded by the Macgillycuddy Reeks, which is the highest mountain range in Ireland. It is also situated around the Lakes of Killarney which creates an atmosphere not to be forgotten as they provide a magnificient backdrop to this Championship Golf course.
Anybody wishing to witness this special event should book the flight, tickets and accommodation well in advance.
Killarney is very easily and quickly accessible from Germany via Kerry Airport, which is located 18 km north of Killarney in Farranfore. It is 90 kms from Cork Airport and 315 kms from Dublin Airport.
